The Jam: this is our choir for Years 1-3. The Jam choir rehearses once a week and is always happy to welcome new members. The Jam singers learn to sing well in tune and time, make musical phrases and follow a conductor. The group performs for school functions and for the Gold Coast eisteddfod where they won a Very Highly Commended in 2011.
The Vox: this group is for students in Years 4-6. Rehearsals are once a week and students build on their existing skills as choristers. Singers learn to sight-read
Strings
Our Suzuki Strings Programme is funded by the Goda Foundation. It recruits students from Prep and Year 1. Specialist ‘Suzuki’ teachers take individual and group lessons catering particularly to the learning needs of very young strings players. Saint Stephen’s College enjoys a professional association with the Suzuki Foundation Australia and is proud to host the annual Gold Coast Suzuki Conference in September each year.
All Year 3 students at Saint Stephen’s College participate in the Year 3 String Programme as part of their Curriculum Music time. From this point on, students will begin to play in a String Orchestra (such as Largo Strings) suited to their ability as well as have group and individual lessons.
Largo Strings is our first string orchestra. Largo caters to beginner string players who have just begun to play their instrument in Year 3.
Andante Strings is the intermediate string orchestra. Players progress for this ensemble to Vivace and/or Orchestra.
Bands
Our Junior Concert Band recruits from Year 3 - 7. For young musicians who can play an octave or more on their instrument, this is an opportunity to begin playing with an ensemble. Students can audition to be part of this ensemble at the end of each academic year for the next year.
Junior Percussion is an option available to Year 4 students who are not playing a string instrument. This group rehearses in Curriculum Music time and teaches students rhythm reading skills and ensemble playing skills.
All Year 5 students, who are not playing a string instrument already, participate in the Year 5 Band Programme as part of their Curriculum Music time. Students will play in an ensemble as well as receive specialist group lessons.
Junior Stage Band is an ensemble which focuses on more contemporary repertoire within the jazz/rock/funk genres. Members of the Junior Concert Band may audition to become part of the Junior Stage Band.
