End of Term One 2015

End of Term One Each year seems to speed by at an ever-increasing pace, perhaps it is because we are all so busy or is it that the world is actually spinning faster? Whatever the reason we now find ourselves at the end of Term One and 25 per cent of the academic year already gone.

Valedictorian Speech 2014 – Jed Dorrington

Good evening ladies and gentlemen, invited guests, parents, friends, teachers (especially our wonderful head of year Ms Hyman), and of course my fellow graduates of the class of 14. It’s hard to write a valedictory address, really hard. It’s not so much that it’s hard think of anything to say, or that one has too little time to say it, it’s just so hard to properly capture the essence of 12 years of schooling in a coherent manner. The hardest part about writing a valedictory speech is the start, the opening paragraph, which is ironic, because the hardest part of schooling is often the final chapter. I remember starting at Saint Stephen’s College in year 2. I remember sitting in the demountable which now houses the uniform bookshop. It was strange, and it was also hard; not in the sense that the work load was difficult, but it was scary being surrounded by kids you had never met in a new school. In fact, I think it was only in year 2 that I really comprehended that I was actually at school, before that, at my school in the Sunshine Coast, I thought mum was just visiting friends or something and consistently forgot to take me with her when she left. But at SSC I came to the realisation that I was in this for the long haul, and it scared the hell out of me.

      Welcome back to 2015

I was delighted to welcome back returning students on Tuesday for the start of the 2015 academic year. I was also delighted to welcome a number of students starting their education at Saint Stephen’s College, although I confess I’ve not been down to see the Prep classes yet as I feel they are best left to settle down for a few days before we meet.

        Welcome back to Term Four!

Dear Parents, Staff, Students and Friends Welcome back to Term Four! The College’s Science faculty hosted a Science Expo in our new Science-in-Action facilities during the last week of term. It was great to see so many students and their parents looking through the new building and watching the various demonstrations being conducted by students. There is no doubt the facility is impressive, but the real challenge is using it to ‘do’ science rather than listen to someone talking about it. The Expo did exactly that, with lots of people mixing, dissecting and having their hair stand on end. I am like most parents in wishing I had been given such an opportunity to experience the wonders of science first hand.

          Valedictory Speech 2013 BJ Doyle

Good evening parents, teachers, friends, and the Class of 2013. I was extremely proud when I was asked to give this speech. I thought ‘this will be the best speech ever – I’m going make it so cool and funny and inspiring, and it’s going to be great.’ Then I sat down to write it and I realised that I didn’t know exactly what to say. I know, it’s hard to believe that I was lost for words considering how much I usually love to talk, but it’s true. It wasn’t because I had nothing to say, in fact, it was quite the opposite. Twelve years of time in a single place gives you a lot to say about it, but I just wasn’t really sure where to start. So, as you would expect, I decided to start from the beginning.
