Senior Drumline ‘Blitzed’ it at the Australian Percussion Eisteddfod

The Saint Stephen’s College Drumline won the hotly contested Test Piece, ‘Blitz’ at the 2017 Australian Percussion Eisteddfod held in Sydney.

Performing Arts Director, Mr Dylan Troyan, said the competition, held at King’s School Parramatta, drew competitors from Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

“Congratulations to our Senior Drumline who won first prize in the Test Piece, ‘Blitz’,” said Mr Troyan.

“Our senior percussionists also enjoyed watching the solo and chamber ensemble sections, as well as a very active workshop in Japanese drumming. A big thank you must go to Mr Peter Neville, our Drumline Director, and Ms Katrina Faulkes-Leng, who with me, accompanied the Drumline to Sydney. Also, to Headmaster Mr Jamie Dorrington who dropped in to cheer us on.”

Year 10 student and Drumline member Nicholas Griffin says the Australian Percussion Eisteddfod is a very prestigious competition which features an Open Drumline competition as its opening section.

“Every year we have seen the competition grow, and the Open Drumline section is hotly contested. This year was especially great as we had a tight-knit group of drummers who had been rehearsing for quite some time, and we felt we were quite prepared for the show that was to come. This was proven by the Senior Drumline winning first place in the Test Piece, ‘Blitz’,” said Nicholan

“Everyone in the group was tremendously proud of our efforts and how we played, both in the Test Piece and in the Own Choice section, which showed off some of our new moves and stick tricks.

“Being a part of the Drumline is an amazing experience that I would encourage anyone to get into as it develops skills, enhances music ability and you get to meet amazing people and have an incredible time.”

Drumline includes: James Benadie, Olivia Biviano, Aidan Gooden, Nicholas Griffin, Michael Lamb, Eliza Leng, Xavier Lyons, Michael Morris, Marcus Pratt and Grant Sampson.
