Game on!! – Saint Stephen’s College Olympics is launched
The evening of 13 October saw the coming together of Staff, Parents, Students, Old Scholars and representatives of the greater Gold Coast community for the launch of the Saint Stephen’s College Olympics to be held in March 2010, the event will see those currently and formerly associated with the College competing against each other in Soccer, Basketball, Hockey, Tennis, Softball, Touch Football, Volleyball, and Netball, with Gold, Silver and Bronze coming a close second to bragging rights and glory on offer to the victors.
Ron Clarke, former Olympics great and Mayor of the Gold Coast, was the first to acknowledge the Organising Committee’s initiative in this world first, and pledged $2,000 in sponsorship as part of his endorsement of the event. That was the start of an avalanche of support on all levels – financial, management assistance, offers of participation from budding athletes, and expressions of interest to be involved in any and all matters of assistance. And these offers have since continued to roll in.
Rhys Vadas challenged all others to “Bring it on” and try to beat the students in their quest for Gold at the Olympics.
Ryan Soars overcame his dilemma of loyalties to invite all comers to take on the Old Scholars who are in their prime and virtually unbeatable.
Mr Neuper, sporting the Team Staff’s low resistance hairdo and “muscular” physique had Adam Tyrus stand up and show what damage the wily staff can
inflict (Adam is currently sporting one of his arms in a sling!).
Bryan Vadas announced the involvement of national sporting heroes and former Olympians that will be taking the field (pending their availability) for the Team Parents (hey, we’ll take any advantage we can get!!!).
Moving forward from the launch, the opportunity still exists for all Parents, Staff, Students, and Old Scholars to get involved. Sponsor a medal, become a team captain, or sign up in a team to play the game of your life.
Let the games begin!!

On 26 August 2009 four of our students reached heights unprecedented in Saint Stephen’s College debating. For the second time, a College team won the Grand Finals of the Gold Coast Secondary Schools Debating Associations competition—the first time for a team of seniors.
This success is all the more spectacular for the fact that two of these students only joined the team this year. Although Jack Nagy and Brendan Josey have debated together in the past, Samantha Manley and Jack Breedon were new additions in 2009 and, as with any new addition, the College watched with interest as they competently prepared and delivered short speeches and rebuttals against other schools.
Our faith in these newcomers has certainly been rewarded, as has the confidence we have always placed in the two more experienced debaters. First speaker Brendan succinctly structured debates for the rest of the team, and third speaker Jack eloquently summarised them, with a particular flair for recognising and rebutting any valid arguments the opposition had made. Jack’s rebuttals are, in fact, nearly legendary in the competition, and he describes the most valuable skill he has learned from debating as, “How to think on my feet.”
Of course, their standing wasn’t always so certain this season; in fact, during the semi-finals, this team debated against another Year Eleven team from Saint Stephen’s College, and the confusion caused by a very close result from six brilliant debaters in orange blazers caused the adjudicators to announce the other team winners. This understandable error was corrected the next day, and the SSC victory traded for another SSC victory.
Now back on track and with a full two days to prepare, our team of rising champions faced the Grand Finals with a determination that was becoming their trademark. Jack Breedon explains that he had to look at his teammates for confirmation when the announcement was made. He goes on to describe his realisation that, “the time we had spent working together and developing as a team and as debaters had been very well spent, and we were all exhilarated. Our parents were even crying.”
This team’s determination, then, has paid off in the form of College History, and is an experience that Jack describes as, “one of the best days in my life.”

On Thursday 6 August every student in the Consolidations Programme took part in the Consolidations Musical for 2009, called 'Conundrums'. The students enjoyed living in the land below the Earth called the 'Kingdom of Witt' where all the gnomes make the jokes for the world. The message was simple - keep a sense of humour and the world will be a better place.
Approximately 300 students participated including a lead cast of 17 members. The teachers worked hard to teach a song, dance and scene to each of their classes. The costumes were colourful and the show went off without a hitch.
Once again the staff, parents and students can look back on their efforts and feel proud of all they have achieved.

The College was delighted to welcome Jessica Mauboy to perform five of her hit songs for the students from Years 4 to 12. The performance was the result of a competition that was run by Renee and Matty from The Hit List on Radio SEA FM and was won by two of our students.

The Preparatory students of Saint Stephen’s College recently showed off their amazing talents at our annual ‘Circus day.’ The children loved dressing up as various circus characters and were excited to parade in their costumes around the school. The day involved lots of activities such as climbing, balancing and juggling. The Preppies discovered throughout the term that everyone has a talent, be it drawing, running, playing a musical instrument or even caring for a friend. Using their talents, they enjoyed exploring our Circus activities and demonstrated how talented they were.
Parents, teachers and students all got involved in the planning of Circus day. We had popcorn, fairy floss, face painting, pin the nose on the clown and a fantastic Magician show. Upon reflection a student remarked that “Circus day was the 'funnest' day ever. I loved having my face painted and I won a prize when I put the nose on the clown.”

The Year 10 Work Experience is a practice designed to give Saint Stephen’s College students an insight into a career or professional pathway that they may decide to pursue in the future. The experience is integrated with the College’s HPD program that helps students examine their interests and potential strengths for casual or fulltime employment. By allowing our students to discover and consolidate their own strengths, prior to work experience, it is hoped that those involved will select a career that is both structured to their abilities and helps them to gain an understanding of what is required to succeed in their chosen field.
This year, our students engaged in a variety of pursuits: everything from V8 Super Cars, Hospital and Health Sciences to Accounting and Teaching. The feedback from both the employers and the “employees” has been extremely positive, with many employers commenting on the enthusiastic attitudes our students adopted and the manner in which they responded to the challenges of a working week.

The Year 7 students had an amazing week. This began with a trip to the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary on Tuesday July 17.
