SPORT

Sport is an integral part of the holistic educational experience that students receive at Saint Stephen's College and we encourage all students to strive to achieve their personal best. There are many opportunities to extend over and above the required amount of participation, to compete at a higher level in a range of sports. Much of the tremendous spirit that exists within the College is generated through sporting avenues.

Sport - An integral part of Saint Stephen's CollegeStudents have an opportunity to be involved in a number of sports through the Association of Private Schools (APS) competition. We require students from Year 4 upwards to play sport to improve fitness and develop skills, to make friends in our teams and with students from other schools, to get to know the coach as another care giver, to obey the rules and respect the referee's decision and to play fairly. Of course, winning is always better then losing, but we will not trade-off the other benefits to win at all costs.

All students are guaranteed a placement in all sporting and House carnival competitions throughout the year. In fact, it is compulsory, unless specifically exempted by the teacher, for all students to participate in the sporting program and attend regular weekly after-school hours training sessions with their team.

Sports Association

Saint Stephen's College is a member of the Associated Private Schools (APS) of which there are eight independent schools. This is a very friendly yet competitive association that maintains the highest standards in sportsmanship, participation and performance. In addition, Saint Stephen's College is also a member of District and Regional affiliations which act as an avenue for further representation in a wide array of sports.

Students Commitment to Sporting Activities

All students are allocated a sporting team twice per year, and are expected to attend weekly training sessions from 3.30pm to 5pm during the season. We ask that parents avoid making appointments for their children during these training times. Part time work, subject tutoring, music lessons, study for exams and so on are not acceptable reasons to miss training. If a one off circumstance should arise, parents should contact the Director of Sport at the College to negotiate leave for the student.

Lachlan MilesLachlan Miles started Taekwondo three years ago with local Master Glenn Parmley of PMA Applied Taekwondo with the aim to learn basic self defence. It became apparent very quickly that Lachlan had a natural talent in the sport and he began to work hard to improve his own standards.

Lachlan has made it to the Queensland State Team again this year (his second year running) and will be travelling to Canberra in October 2010 for the Australian National Titles.

Congratulations to Lachlan for coming so far and good luck for what is yet to come.

Saint Stephen's College educates for the future, not just the present.
