What is Everyday English?

Everyday English is the language used by regular people when they talk to one another casually. It is the must-know language that you hear and experience in informal settings. Moving to a new country is not easy and cultural norms, idioms and slang are not taught in textbooks. Mastering Everyday English Together (MEET) will help you to build the confidence to ‘speak up’ and ask questions, converse with locals and learn to understand the many phrases and customs that are common in Australia.

MEET the Executive Director of International Education

SAM HOLMES

The cultural diversity of our Saint Stephen’s College family is vibrant, energising and future-focussed. It is our differences that truly set us apart; to make us one. I am so very proud of the many wonderful contributions our  students from overseas and their families make to Saint Stephen’s College.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our MEET (Master Everyday English Together) Program. This course is individually designed for our non-English speaking parents of the College. This course focusses on learning English in a fun, interactive, innovative, practical, relaxed and pressure-free environment. Learning casual, commonly used language within a practical and creative arts teaching framework will allow confidence in conversational English to flow and flourish.

The units are designed to support engagement as a valued parent of the College and to help you understand our systems, processes and cultural norms. These skills should allow you to become more involved in the rich tapestry of our parent community where your contributions are valued and appreciated. MEET content will allow you to delve deeper into your life on the Gold Coast and support you to make the most out of your time and experience in Australia.

I encourage you to take the challenge and enrol in our MEET Program where you will form new friendships, learn English skills and most importantly, have fun!

MEET the Educator

CAROLINE TAYLOR

Caroline has worked with students at Saint Stephen’s College since 2004. She has developed a unique way of language teaching and learning through her expertise in vocal studies and TESOL. Caroline holds a Bachelor of Music Theatre, Masters of Music Studies and Grad Cert in TESOL and is currently furthering her tertiary study in the areas of Counselling (USQ) and Secondary Education (UNE).

Caroline works across both the Music and International departments within the College. She has designed and implemented Intensive English Creative Arts courses for international students from Beginner to Advanced English proficiency.

Combining her passion for the Performing Arts and TESOL was a natural progression for Caroline, using her vocal studies to aid pronunciation, music to assist English fluency and performance skills to help the students' confidence grow. She is a strong believer in practical and interactive applications for learning English and encourages all her students to participate fearlessly and have fun within her classes!

When she is not in the TESOL classroom, you will find Caroline teaching singing, running the College choir, directing the senior College musical or enjoying the Gold Coast highlights. She looks forward to MEETing you all!
