The Secret Garden Early Learning Centre at Saint Stephen’s College provides an innovative, nurturing start to learning in a warm, campus-connected environment. Our experienced, caring educators deliver engaging programs that support children’s social, intellectual and physical development, while daily interaction with the wider College library visits, whole-school events and relationships with teachers and  students builds confidence and eases the transition to school.

Free Kindy (from 1 January 2024)

We are proud to offer Free Kindy for children who are at least 4 years old by 30 June in the year before starting school. Free Kindy is a government-approved program delivered by qualified early childhood teachers: 15 hours per week (600 hours/year across 40 weeks).

About The Secret Garden

We are a purposefully small centre focused on helping children blossom into happy, confident, well-rounded individuals. Small cohorts enable personalised care and strong relationships, ensuring each child feels secure and supported. Our philosophy values every child’s strengths and fosters growth through fun, challenging and developmentally appropriate experiences. We partner closely with families and maintain daily communication about progress and achievements.

Classrooms

To meet individual developmental needs we offer three distinct rooms:

  • Grasshopper (Kindy): 2.5–3.5 years — children must turn 3 before 30 June in the year of enrolment.
  • Dragonfly (Pre-Prep): 3.5 years to school age — children must turn 4 before 30 June in the year of enrolment.
  • Butterfly (Pre-Prep): 3.5 years to school age — children must turn 4 before 30 June in the year of enrolment.

Curriculum and Programs

Our program follows the Early Years Learning Framework and the Queensland Kindergarten Early Learning Guidelines, with a negotiated emergent curriculum shaped by children and families. Offerings include:

  • Numeracy and literacy experiences
  • Dedicated sports program and yoga
  • Technology-based activities
  • Co-curricular options (dance, tennis, etc.) delivered by approved external providers

The Secret Garden Pre-Prep Program

Available to children who are four by 30 June in the year prior to Preparatory, our Pre-Prep is taught by degree-qualified early childhood teachers. Learning outcomes follow Queensland and national early years guidelines. The program runs 15 hours per week (over two or more days) for 40 weeks, supporting academic, sporting, cultural and social readiness and a smooth transition to Preparatory.

We believe it takes a village to raise a child. At Saint Stephen’s Early Learning Centre, families find a welcoming community where children belong, thrive and grow.
