Year Level Placements

Students are placed one academic year below their age-appropriate year level unless they have spent a minimum of two years in a school where all subjects are taught in English, or they have a strong level of English as ascertained by a certified English language assessment and can provide these reports upon application.

Academic Entry Requirements Mainstream with EOL support

Students must provide evidence of two years of academic performance, social skills, commitment and effort appropriate to entry to the year level requested on the Application for Enrolment or offered as an alternative point of entry by Saint Stephen’s College in the Letter of Offer.

Years 4 – 6A passing grade in English (literacy) and Mathematics (numeracy). Achievement in other subjects must be appropriate for entry into the intended year level.
Years 7 – 9A passing grade in English (literacy) and Mathematics (numeracy).  Achievement in other subject areas must be appropriate for entry into the intended year level, with no more than three (3) subjects studied below a passing grade.
Years 10-12A passing grade in English (literacy) and Mathematics (numeracy), and – Year 10 – no more than two (2) other subjects studied below a passing grade. Year 11 (offshore, direct entry) – no more than one (1) other subject studied below a passing grade. Year 11 – 12 (onshore transfer) – academic results confirm the student remain on track for a QCE.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

Saint Stephen’s College entrance requires evidence of sufficient proficiency in English to successfully meet the curriculum demands of the enrolled course.

Applicants are assessed individually, based on the contents of their report cards and personal references, and may also be required to undertake an approved English Language Proficiency Test upon application.

If not presenting appropriate evidence of English language proficiency at the time of the application, Saint Stephen’s College will use, as a measure of assessing English Language Performance (against the National Languages and Literacy Institute of Australia), EOL Band scales Saint Stephen’s College will assess the student’s application for entry based on satisfactory test results as follows:

If undertaking an Intensive English language course with another Provider before beginning mainstream studies, English language proficiency will be reassessed at the conclusion of the language course to ensure the student’s level of proficiency is sufficient to allow them to commence their mainstream course.
