Year Level Placements

Students are placed one academic year below their age-appropriate year level unless they have spent a minimum of two years in a school where all subjects are taught in English, or they have a strong level of English as ascertained by a certified English language assessment and can provide these reports upon application.

English Support

Students who do not speak Standard Australian English as their first language are personally supported and tutored by our Intensive English and English Other Language (EOL) tutors. Modified programs are individually created to offer international students the language support that they require in order to reach their potential.

Modified Program

Our modified programs present a unique opportunity for international students to experience our Intensive English program in addition to selected classes in a mainstream setting. This hybrid model of learning focuses on developing English proficiency to allow students a smooth transition into studying a full mainstream curriculum.

With innovation at the centre of all that we do, Saint Stephen’s College places an importance on providing students the opportunity to experience a diverse range of educational experiences. Students enrolling in our modified programs will be timetabled in both Intensive English and Mainstream classes as well as excursions and events from the commencement of enrolment. Intensive English classes operate in small student numbers to offer individualised instruction and personalised tuition. These classes have an impressive record and reputation for providing students exceptional language support to maximise academic outcomes. Saint Stephen’s College Intensive English classes operate in Years 4 to 10.

International students entering in Preparatory to Year 3 do not need to sit an English proficiency exam and are integrated directly into the mainstream classroom with EOL support. Students entering Year 4 or above, must demonstrate a proficiency level in English before entering a full mainstream timetable.

Mainstream with EOL support

International students who have successfully progressed through the modified program or reached a certain level of English Proficiency through assessment or upon entry, are considered English Other Language (EOL) students. These students receive small group EOL tuition in addition to their mainstream curriculum to help them meet their academic potential. Some students have the opportunity to study their native language – this makes their academic load more manageable. Saint Stephen’s College EOL classes operate from Preparatory to Year 12.
