FARA and SSC Olympics

SUNDAY 16 May 2010

The Olympics was organised to to raise funds to research into a cure for Friedreich's Ataxia – a debilitating condition which affects 300 Australians including two former students of the College, Jamie-Lee and Samantha Dwyer. Friedreich's Ataxia does not have a high profile and the funds raised will make a real difference. A relatively small increase in the research budget may bring about a cure within the next few years.

Students, Staff, Parents, and Old Scholars competed against each other in the sports of Soccer, Basketball, Hockey, Netball, Tennis, Touch Football, Softball, and Volleyball for Gold, Silver, Bronze and Participation medals (and not to mention sheer prestige!!).

The day was a great success with over $70,000 raised!!!

Although there were many sore bodies at the end of the day (and for the next week) - Everyone had a great time and it was an opportunity for the entire Saint Stephen's Community to get involved.

Information about FARA

(Friedreich's Ataxia Research Association)

Friedreich’s Ataxia (FA) is a rare disease that mainly affects the nervous system and the heart.

Its major neurological symptoms include muscle weakness and, of course, ataxia, meaning a loss of balance and coordination. It doesn’t affect parts of the brain involved in thinking. Its effects on the heart range from mild, non-symptomatic abnormalities to life-threatening problems in the heart’s musculature.

FA isn’t caused by anything a person does, and it’s not contagious. It’s a hereditary disease, caused by a defective gene that can be passed down through a family from one generation to the next.

Local Gold Coasters and part of the Saint Stephens College community, Jamie-Lee (Class of 2007) and Samantha Dwyer (Class of 2009), through a random genetic match-up, contracted FA, which has seen these once active, healthy girls, gradually succumb to the use of walking frames and wheel chairs for mobility

FARA needs to raise $100,000 a year over the next three years to move this research forward. Close friends of the Dwyers launched an ambitious fundraising campaign to help – The Saint Stephen's Olympics.

Still Keen to Contribute?

The Saint Stephen’s College Olympics goes just part of the way to helping us reach the funding targets for research into a cure for FA. If you want to donate, we would welcome any contribution.

Lachlan MilesLachlan Miles started Taekwondo three years ago with local Master Glenn Parmley of PMA Applied Taekwondo with the aim to learn basic self defence. It became apparent very quickly that Lachlan had a natural talent in the sport and he began to work hard to improve his own standards.

Lachlan has made it to the Queensland State Team again this year (his second year running) and will be travelling to Canberra in October 2010 for the Australian National Titles.

Congratulations to Lachlan for coming so far and good luck for what is yet to come.

Saint Stephen's College educates for the future, not just the present.

James Greig graduated from Saint Stephen's College in 2001 and went on to complete a degree in Information Technology at Griffith University. In 2004, James founded his own software development business (Bluehype) and is now the Director of a multi-national website development company (Bloomtools). James was recently a finalist in Anthill Magazine's Under 30 Competition recognising young entrepreneurs.
